Liguria offers over 200 miles of picturesque coastline, which stretches form the French border over across the boundary with Tuscany. Formerly a haven of Pirates, who would shelter their ships amongst the narrow rocky inlets, Liguria has since become a mecca, not only for the rich and famous, but also for those looking for a relaxing, sun drenched beach holiday in Italy. The deep-water ports that once held Pirate vessels now hold deluxe yachts from all over the world.
SPECIAL EVENTS:
May, Foccacia Festival. Recco, near Genoa is the gastronomic capital of Liguria and host to an annual celebration of the region's most famous food...'foccacia'. Focaccia bread has been around for 500 years and is as delicious with cheese or onions as it is plain with a sprinkle of sea salt.
June, The Battle of the Flowers. During the annual Battaglia dei Fiori in Ventimiglia flowers rain down on the town, madly-decorated cars depict baroque figures and music, singing and dancing fill the streets.
Glorious and exuberant urban chaos erupts every year as the locals celebrate this life-affirming ritual by throwing flowers everywhere and competing vigorously in constructing the most intricate and incredible displays for the colourful parade, one of the cheekiest festivals of its kind in Italy.
